Der 1929 im italienischen San Miniato geborene Vittorio Taviani studierte in Pisa Jura. Sein 1931 ebenso in San Miniato geborener Bruder Paolo studierte Kunst. Die Brüder begannen, sich für Film zu interessieren und realisierten 1954 mit "San Miniato, Luglio ’4" einen ersten gemeinsamen Kurzfilm über ihr Heimatdorf. Mit Padre Padrone (1977) wurden sie auch über die Grenzen Italiens hinaus bekannt.
